Spanish explorers called this area the ‘burned valley’ because they believed that the area had been parched by the volcanic eruption but it was only a Texas summer. The Spanish settlers came to Quemado in 1675 with The Bosque-Larios expedition. Hans Lahrman, an apiarist, began a trade that became an important industry in the region in the early 1900s. In 1932 the Maverick County Irrigation Canal was formed to provide water. In 1940 livestock raising, dairying, and irrigated truck farming were the main sources of income. According to the 2010 census, the population was 230 which was the same as in the year 2000.
