The U.S town of Refugio is located in Refugio County, Texas. The town lies strategically at the intersection of State Highway 202 and the U.S Highways 77 and 183. The town was first settled in 1749. Later in 1795, the Refugio Mission was transferred to this area. James Heweston and James Power obtained the rights to the mission building. The move led to the establishment of the Villa Refugio in the same year. As a result, the villa was in 1834 named the center of the Refugio Municipality. In 1837, this town was incorporated. The first post office was founded in 1847.
