The unincorporated community of Roan Prairie lies at the intersection of State Highways 90 and 30 in Grimes County, Texas. The place was first settled in the early 1830s. The community was named after Willis I. Roan who migrated from Alabama to this area around 1841. Roan majorly contributed to the establishment of this area after opening a general store. Later in 1849, Roan became the first postmaster in this community. The International-Great Northern Railroad passed through this community in 1903. The community was developed by the Smith Land and Improvement Company under the name Steadmanville. The name was later changed to Roans Prairie.
