Rusk is the city in Cherokee County and its county seat. It has a population of a bit over 5500. The city was established by the Texas state legislature in 1846 and it was named after Thomas Jefferson Rusk who was a signer of Texan Declaration of Independence. The city is also a home to a longest foot bridge in the nation and the longest zip line as well. The Heritage Center of Cherokee County & Cherokee Civic Theater are located in Rusk. The demographic of the city is somewhat skewed because of the prison located near the city.
