Thornton is a town in Limestone County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located on SH 14, southwest of the county. Although it was first settled in 1868, it wasn’t until 1870, when a railway was built through the area, that the community started to develop as a depot. Thornton was named after John Thornton who was one of the first settlers in the region. The post office was inaugurated in 1873, and the town soon had cotton gins and a mercantile business. The town depended largely on agriculture, but brickyards and the manufacturing of ceramics also contributed to its growth. The town was incorporated in 1907; the number of residents soon increased and the businesses expanded. The town peaked in 1927, when it had 2,000 residents, but the Great Depression dropped the numbers down to 739. As of 2010, it has a population of 526.
