Thrall is a city in Williamson County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located on the MoPac and US 79, east of the county. Thrall was founded in 1876 as a railroad depot. Back then, it was still called as Stiles Switch, after a local ranching family. In 1901, the post office was inaugurated and the town was renamed Thrall, after Homer Thrall, a historian and a Methodist minister who was greatly admired by the prominent Stiles family. Thrall became known as a cattle-ranching and farming center in the early 20th century. An oil boom in 1915 amped up its economic growth. 200 wells were soon built and the number of residents peaked at 3,000 at some point. However, when the oil boom faded, the number of residents dropped to 272. The community gradually grew after another oil boom in the 1930s. As of 2018, it has a population of 953.
