Troup is a city in Smith and Cherokee counties, Texas. It is located at the junction of FM 13, 15, 346, and 347, as well as SH 100 and 135, southeast of Smith County. The area was first settled in 1848 but it wasn’t until the early 1870s, when a railroad passed through the area, that the settlement started to develop. Back then, it was still called Zavala until it was changed to Troup in 1877. The town quickly grew from then. Cotton production, along with several small businesses were the town’s major economic activity. The discovery of oil in the 1930s amplified the community’s growth; the oilfield made Troup a significant rail town. By 1948, the town became a vital shipping center for fruits and vegetables and became the second-largest town in Smith County. As of 2010, it has a population of 1,869.
