A community called Vanderbilt grew around the depot of the railway in 1904. The town is currently located in southeastern Jackson County. Vanderbilt has served as a shipping and retail center for local farmers and ranchers. Vanderbilt survived the Great Depression and at the end of WWII, it had 300 residents. The population reached its zenith in 1962 at 900 but declined after that. Vanderbilt is served by the Industrial Independent School District and is home to the Industrial High School Cobras. As of 2010 census, the population was 395 people which gave a population density of 207 residents per square miles.
