The name Vernon was the people’s second choice after the Post Office refused the requested Eagle Flat. Vernon was elected as county seat of Wilbarger County in 1881. Vernon was probably named either for George Washington's Mount Vernon or for a traveling whiskey salesman named Vernon Brown. The town became a trading center that attracted many settlers. In 1990 Vernon was a center for agriculture-related products and for oil. Every third weekend of May, Vernon is home to the Santa Rosa Roundup which is a major national rodeo. Jack Teagarden, a famous jazz musician was born in Vernon. The Red River Valley Museum has an exhibit on him among other things.
