The community of Woodlawn goes back to the 1850s, just when the Bethesda Baptist Church was established. The church itself was renamed to Woodlawn Baptist Church after some time which is why the community is named this way. The community really started when the Texas and Pacific Railroad arrived in the town in the 1870s. The town was granted a post office in 1874, and ten years after that the town had a reported population of around one hundred people. Woodlawn seemed working pretty well with that number of citizens and it endured up until the 1940s when it went down a little bit to seventy residents. When the gas field was started progressing in the area, from the 1960s to the 2000s, the population grew to what it is today with around 370 residents.
