Known by the settlers as Wolf Point, Tiger Point, Petry Woods, or Carter's Woods, the town currently goes by Nome. It is located in northwestern Jefferson County. When the railroad was built in the 1860s, the stop was called Congreve Station in recognition of a New York financier. Nome is a center for local agriculture, particularly rice growing. In 1936, the discovery of oil and natural gas created a new industry for the region. Nome was then incorporated in 1971.
