Orange Grove has a total area of 1.1 square miles and is situated at the intersection of State Highway 359 and Farm Road 624, eighteen miles north of Alice in northeastern Jim Wells County, Texas. It was originally part of the Ventana Ranch owned by George and Hannah (Compton) Reynolds who donated 51 acres of land, in March 1889, to the SAAP (San Antonio and Aransas Pass) Railway to enable them to build a railroad stop on the ranch. George Reynolds, Jr., and Ernest Miller then hired Fennell Dibrell and Max Starcke in 1908 to subdivide and sell 2,500 acres cut from the Ventana Ranch and from Miller's ranch. Dibrell and Starcke platted streets and also sold a large portion of the land to German settlers from other German Texas towns. The name Orange Grove was chosen to attract more settlers by evoking the booming and profitable citrus industry in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. In 1909 a post office was opened and the first store was also established by L. W. Mumme, who accepted produce as payment on accounts. Also, the Orange Grove Rifle Club was organized in 1911 and by 1912 had its own hall. Finally, in 1914, the railroad line and a station were finally finished. Airports that are located in Orange Grove include Floyd Ranch Airport (TA56) with 1 Runway and Orange Grove Nalf Airport (NOG) with 2 Runways. The city's population in 2017 was 1,313 and it is served by the Orange Grove Independent School District.
