It’s one of the oldster communities in the region, first group of settlers founded a city here in 1598. The city was second in size in Mexico, behind only El Paso, but it lost a lot of its population to the salt wars and it was bypassed by the railroad in 1870s which contributed to its decline. The city features a chapel that functioned as presidio chapel. The wedding scene for the movie Fandango (1985) was filmed in the plaza of the San Elizario church.
