Washington-on-the-Brazos is an unincorporated coterie situated in Washington County in Texas. The town itself was established when the Republic of Texas was still a part of Mexico. The townsite was the location where the Convention of 1836 and the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence happened. The community itself has been known as the birthplace of Texas ever since. Washington County was established in 1837 when Washington-on-the-Brazos became the county seat. The county seat was changed from the community to Brenham in 1844. The community has an estimated population of 265 residents, and the town is mostly forgotten other than people living on the site.
