Wilmer is a city situated in Dallas County in Texas. The area where Wilmer is situated now was initially settled by Andrew K. Gray before the 1850s. The initial name of the townsite used to be Prairie Valley when the Houston and Texas Central Railway arrived in the area in 1872. Twelve years after, the town was granted a post office with a new name, Wilmer, for A.J. Wilmer who was a conductor on the railway. The town was incorporated in 1945 and the first mayor was J.H. May. The town’s population was 3,682 as of the 2010 census. Wilmer’s public education system is being served by the Dallas Independent School District.
