The Texas horned lizard, also known as Phrynosoma cornutum, is the official state reptile of Texas that was assigned by the Texas Legislature in 1993. In the early times of the southwest region of the state, horned lizards are painted or drawn on potteries and petroglyphs; for native Americans, it was a symbol of happiness and health. A truly skilled hunter and a peaceful creature, Texas horned lizard also helps in diminishing insect pests; ants, grasshoppers, beetles, crickets, spiders, and pillbugs are part of its diet. However, two out of the three native Texas horned lizard species are now listed as threatened – one of which is the Texas horned lizard. Nevertheless, these species have become an important part of the state’s heritage.
