With basic knowledge in brewing his own alcohol and beer, Van and his wife decided on the direction he was going to take. In 2016, the husband and wife team established the distillery, and in 2017 purchased the Conroe property it stands on. By July 2018, the Barkins were in the liquor business. Bartletts Distillery's current products include white, dark, gold, and spiced rums, single malt whiskeys, and an un-aged version of its single malt whiskey. They recently renovated their tasting room. It now accommodates more people, and includes a small stage for live performances. They also made restrooms compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
