Gaines County is a county situated in the state of Texas. Seminole is the county seat of Gaines County. James Gaines was the namesake of the town. He was a merchant that signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, he was born in Virginia. The lands were mostly occupied by the Comanche Indians and Mexican Comancheros until 1876. The county was formed from Bexar County in 1876. On the twenty-fourth of October 1905, the county was officially organized. The first railroad that arrived in the county was the Santa Fe Railway in 1917.
