Named after Capt. J. G. C. Arthur, Arthur City, is found in Lamar County with an area code of 903. One of the intriguing things about Arthur is that its public school district is believed to be better than the Texas State average despite its underdog status. In the last ranking, its school district was ranked at 499. The town's population by 1890 was 300, during which time timber was the backbone of its economy. By 1914, the population shrunk by half, and it reduced to approximately 100 people during the Second World War. By 2008, the town's population was 200.
