Belton city is the seat of Bell County and falls under the Killeen-Temple Metropolitan area on the Interstate 35 corridor. The town had a population of 22,222 by the end of 2018, according to census estimate. The first settlers arrived in 1850 and named the place Nolanville, which was the name of a local spring. The name was changed to Belton in 1851 after it became the seat of Bell County. By 1960, the town was the largest in the entire county with a population of 300.
