Hungerford is a census-designated place in Wharton County that can be found at the Upper Gulf Coast region of the U.S. state of Texas. It was first established in the 1870s as a farming and cattle-raising community when George Quinan headquartered his operations here. To honor his contribution, the settlement was formerly named as Quinan. When the townsite was surveyed in 1883, the community was renamed Hungerford, after Daniel Hungerford, a railroad executive. Hungerford largely depended on its agriculture industry; grains, cotton, pecans, and cattle were its primary crops. Although Highway 59 bypassed Hungerford in the 1980s, the CDP remained to the headquarters of J.D. Hudgins Ranch Inc., Strouhal’s Tire Recapping Plant Inc., and the Teen Challenge of South Texas New Life Rehabilitation Center. As of 2010, it has a population of 347.
