Mercedes City is located in Hidalgo County in the US state of Texas. The city’s population as per the 2010 census was 15,570. The city was originally located in Capisallo Pasture owned by Jim Welles. The city stands on US Highway 83 in the Rio Grande valley. Settlers first arrived here in the 1770s. It was part of a Spanish land grant to Juan Jose Ynojosa de Balli. In the 1850s, this place was Manuel Cavazoz and Ramon Cavazos’s Anacuitas Ranch. In the 1900s, Anacuitas Ranch was replaced by Fuste Ranch, which was owned by the Cavazos heirs. By 2000, Mercedes town had 13,649 and 377 businesses.
