Weslaco is a city in Hidalgo County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located on US 83 and FM 88. The area was referred to as Llano Grande back in 1747. When a railway reached the area, the developers got interested in establishing a farming community. A company then bought a major fraction of the grant and the town became a soldier’s camp to control the Mexican raids. Four years later, 30,000 acres of land were sold at ninety dollars per acre to W. E. Stewart Land Company, from which the town was named after. Eventually, the land was once again sold and Weslaco was finally laid out in 1919. The town suffered severe calamities of fire, flood, hurricane, and freeze. The hurricane killed forty people and the freeze killed roughly 12 million grapefruit trees. The number of residents gradually grow over time. As of 2019, it has an estimated population of 41,629.
