West Columbia is a city in Brazoria County, Texas that is located on SH 35 and SH 36, west-central of the county. It was founded in 1826 and was formerly known as Columbia. Oil was discovered in 1918 and the town soon became a trade center for oil, sulfur, cotton, and rice. The number of residents continued to grow despite its drop during the Great Depression. In the 1960s, oil companies built wells in and around the area, and West Columbia had the largest cattle populace in the state of Texas. The town featured recreational opportunities such as fishing, hunting, and swimming. The famous Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historical Park was restored in 1977. Since then, the town holds an annual festival and the park’s plantation days in April. As of 2010, it has a population of 3,905.
