Under The Radar Brewery

Craft Brewery in Houston - 16.95 mi

As with other craft breweries, Under The Radar Brewery got its start in homebrewing. Its three founders brewed in their garage until they realized they could bring their hobby to the next level. Starting out small and opening without so much as a sign, the brewery’s name suggests how things were initially done at the brewery. It also found a perfect spot among condos and townhomes, and further bolsters the under-the-radar nature of the brewery. Their taproom, though small, has an outdoor area, and serves five “usuals” (their core beers) and a couple of seasonal/ special beers. It’s also kid- and dog-friendly, much like a backyard in one’s neighborhood. They’re not canning their brews yet, but do check their website for updates on where their beers are available.

Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 17.24 mi

The Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company thrives on creativity and imagination. It has a simple mission: (1) “create great craft beer that is unapologetically Houston,” and (2) “bring people around great beer.” Their slogan reflects it – “Houston’s most creative brewery”. Founded by two friends Ras Zarinfar and Ryan Robertson in March 2011, many things have happened since they started at their original location on Nolda Street. Once a boat storage warehouse, they imagined, and created, a successful brewery and taproom business. About 70 craft beers later, they imagined bigger things for their Houston community. Within six weeks, the company raised $1M in funding from 583 individuals to build a 28,000 sq. ft. brewery and taproom. The new location opens in Fall 2019, with three floors of beer goodness. It’s much like, as the owners would like to say, Willy Wonka’s beer factory, but run by a Belgian monk in Texas cowboy boots! The deck offers spectacular views of the Houston skyline! Imagine that…

Southern Yankee Beer Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 17.43 mi

A family owned and operated craft brewery in Houston, Southern Yankee Beer Company is known for bringing novel brews to the people! The owners are family of beer lovers, world travelers, and Houston transplants. They are passionate beer nerds that answered a call to brew for Houston, Spring, and Conroe. They offer a rotating selection of beers brewed in-house, including their five mainstays “Who's Paul? Pale Ale, HEYYEAYEA DIPA, Porter's Porter, Que Pablo Mexican Lager, and Fuzzy Bastard Cream Ale.” The taproom is located upstairs with plenty of seats and TVs while the bar outside is located in a small hut with a lot of seatings as well. Southern Yankee Beer Company is dedicated to make better beer, providing a better experience, and forging a larger beer community. It is family friendly, and there are usually food options from local food trucks that come out to serve.

The Phoenix On Westheimer

Craft Brewery in Houston - 18.06 mi

Established in December 2006, Phoenix On Westheimer is a Houston neighborhood brewpub. This “home-away-from-home” invites guests to “a welcoming place” and features an extensive selection of house brews and craft beers from other popular Texas breweries. They also carry craft beers from other states, several national brands, and even European imports. There is wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages, of course, and the food menu is just as extensive. Because it’s a sports bar, after all, there are 5 large projection screens and 24 LED TVs. They even say that if a game is “televised or legally streamed”, they should have access to it. Not interested in the game? There are other ways to unwind, including billiards. Still not convinced? They have daily deals that might just make you drop by for a visit.

Karbach Brewing Co

Craft Brewery in Houston - 18.85 mi

Co-founders Ken Goodman and Chuck Robertson started with the distribution company CR Goodman Distribution Co., which brought in various labels into Texas. The company grew rapidly fast and the company moved to a larger brewhouse by 2014. In May 2016, the brewery added an on-site restaurant and biergarten. To much publicity in November 2016, the brewery announced the company's acquisition by Anheuser-Busch InBev. With this development, the brewery expects to expand capacity to 150,000 barrels per year in 2019. The brewery continues to produce popular its "mainstays" Hopadillo IPA, Love Street Kolsch-Style Blonde, and Crawford Bock, among others. They also continue to produce their popular seasonal and specialty series beers. Tip: The brewery conducts daily tours with schedules posted on their website. They require visitors, however, to wear closed-toe shoes.

Baileson Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 19.05 mi

Established by husband Adam Cryer and his wife, Sarah Pope, the Baileson Brewing Company features two of man’s best friends – beers and pooches. The “pooches” part come from the company’s name – a combination of the couple’s two dogs Bailey and Jameson. (They have a third fur baby called Beau, who came later.) The brewery, of course, supplies the handcrafted beers, especially ales. Located in the outskirts of the Rice Village area in Houston, the brewery was an old gas station built in 1950 until the building became an auto-service station in the mid-1970s. The couple retained the exterior canopy, which serves as the brewpub’s patio, and fitted it with picnic tables. They allow non-beer fans to bring wine from their neighbor next door, and allow outside food. The place, of course, is “dog-friendliest”, with the couple claiming that their pooches “have better social lives” than their humans.

Whole Food Market Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 20.57 mi

According to James, the brewery is “an off the wall concept of grocery store and brewery in one”. This Houston location on 1700 Post Oak Blvd also distributes to a few bars including The Flying Saucer and Craft Beer Cellar. The other location in San Jose also has a brewery but does not serve other accounts. According to an online interview with James, the team uses a 5BBL system for now but hopes to expand soon, including canning their own brews.

Fortress Beer Works

Craft Brewery in Spring - 21.17 mi

Fortress BeerWorks based in Spring, Texas opened in mid-March 2019. Dion Billard was a homebrewer and friends Robert Fleming, John O’Hara, and Shawn Stasiuk used to hang around his garage for his beers. The four were friends at their day job. The brewery’s opening makes it Spring’s first and the 53rd for the Greater Houston area. The secluded but inviting taproom and brewery has over 6,600 square feet of space for guests. The indoor and outdoor seating areas easily accommodate over 100 people. There’s a fenced in playground for kids with plans to add more kid-friendly stuff. Food trucks will provide the food although guests are welcome to bring in their own. The brewery is also ideal for owners to bring their dogs. For options other than beer, the brewery has cider, root beer, and a selection of wines.

11 Below Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 21.57 mi

11 Below Brewing Company currently offers 13 varieties of craft beer – so, no, their name does not refer to the excellent beers they brew in North Houston. Here’s a hint – their co-founders worked at Texas oilfields at some point, but their love for beers led them to brewing beers instead. Four out of the 13 varieties they brew are available all year round, while the rest are seasonal offerings or specials so call ahead before heading out the door. All are available on draft while a selection is available in 12 oz cans at your favorite retailers. Oh – and all have clever names with “best paired with” recommendations. The company has a tasting room open to the public. Hours are Thursdays to Fridays from 5pm to 9pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm to 9pm.  Admission is free, and they’re also available for private events.

"It's got a great outdoor space: a small (but roomy) patio that opens onto a huge yard with a large tree growing in the center". Also, "they brew everything there, and they constantly have new stuff on the rotation since their system is designed for pretty small batches". They are also "dog-friendly and family-friendly with a large outdoor space for kids to play!" Bakfish Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Pearland - 24.64 mi

Bakfish Brewing Company has a distinction that no one can ever take away -- Pearland’s first craft brewery and brewpub. Established by friends Brian Allen and Kris Szecsy, they quit their jobs to establish the brewery in 2016. Houston metro area’s third largest city was somewhat of a “beer desert” because it had no local brewery of its own prior to its opening. With a 2,000 square foot air-conditioned taproom and a large covered patio, the brewery accommodates seating for about 300. There are five flagship brews including I Tell You Wit (a Belgian wit bier), Golden Ale (a blond ale), and Defying Gravity double IPA, with rotating seasonal and small batch releases at the taproom. The brewery does not serve food but has scheduled rotating food trucks onsite. Guests can also have food delivered or bring their own at the family- and dog-friendly brewpub.
