Whole Food Market Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 24.05 mi

Whole Foods Market Brewing is one of two Whole Foods U.S. locations with a brewery inside the store. Its current brewer, James Carlyle, took over after his mentor Dave Ohmer left. According to James, the brewery is “an off the wall concept of grocery store and brewery in one”. This Houston location on 1700 Post Oak Blvd also distributes to a few bars including The Flying Saucer and Craft Beer Cellar. The other location in San Jose also has a brewery but does not serve other accounts. According to an online interview with James, the team uses a 5BBL system for now but hopes to expand soon, including canning their own brews.

Eureka Heights Brewing Company

The six owners of Eureka Heights Brewing Company, three married couples actually, named their brewery after a fault line that runs through The Heights area in Houston. By design, the brewery specializes in “sessionable beers” with low ABVs. Seasonal offerings - some with higher ABVs - complement their core beers. At the spacious 20,000 square feet taproom, a former food distribution warehouse, visitors can see the gleaming stainless steel tanks while enjoying their beers. Open since fall 2016, the brewery is popular for their Wednesday Trivia Nights. The breweries started canning their beers in summer 2018, and these are already available in major stores. The team keeps things around the brewery light and humorous. For example, the owners usually name their beers after inside jokes or references. Food is available via local food trucks, and the outdoor seating area is pet-friendly.

City Acre Brewing Co.

Craft Brewery in Houston - 24.59 mi

Just 10 minutes north of downtown Houston, the City Acre Brewing finally opened in 2016 and Houston fell in love. The four-year delay did the owners a favor. They used the place as an events venue while they completed their Texas permits. Meanwhile, the plants and trees in the area had time to grow, and the brewpub had time to perfect its beers and recipes. When they finally opened, the raised vegetable gardens became a source for the seasonal farm-to-table menu. “I found the setting enchanting,” says one review, “(and) gardeners will enjoy checking out (the garden).” With Adirondack chairs and picnic tables scattered about, “it was quite easy to spend a few hours enjoying the blossoming gardens,” says another. The beers on taps, of course, are getting rave reviews,too. In addition, the brewery offers beer cocktails, a selection of wines, and feature their own house-made sodas.

Spindletap Brewery

Known for an oil & gas motif, philanthropy with child-driven causes, and killin’ it in the haze craze, Spindletap Brewery features a comfortable taproom with four flat-screen televisions behind the bar and five more overlooking the made-on-site picnic tables. They offer a wide selection of craft beers including their well-made “Blonde Ale” which is a solid crossover beer to welcome newcomers to the local-brew scene. For timid beer drinkers, the “Boomtown Blonde” is a light and refreshing starter. Other offerings include “Hopper House Double IPA, Pale Ale, a Single-hop India Pale Ale and the Honey Hole ESB.” They have a spacious production area that includes a projector capable of beaming a 300-inch high-definition image on a blank wall.
