One of the smallest rural cities in Texas, Big Lake is named after a dry lake and is located in Reagan County. The dry creek is the largest in entire Texas, being over two sections long and had no outlet. It is known to hold water after heavy rains or high runoffs, but only temporarily. The town started as a ranching community after a railroad reached the area in 1912. Another factor that spurred its growth is the Santa Rita well discovered in 1923.It is this well that contributed to Big Lake being granted the status of the official seat of Reagan County.
