Chilton, Texas was originally called Abney’s Farm. The first white settlers were five Missouri families who arrived in 1854. The town is located in northwestern Falls County. A man was accidentally shot after being mistaken for being a bear. After 1888, Chiton served as a shipping center. The Methodist church was established in 1874 and has served the community since. The Chilton post office opened in 1882 and was named after Lysias B. Chilton who had opened the first store in the region. As of 2007, only a small eatery and a post office remains.
