Celis Brewery

Craft Brewery in Austin - 17.67 mi

The Celis Brewery name is synonymous with witbier or “white beer”. The name Celis had gone through two iterations previously. Pierre Celis, the legendary brewer, built two breweries - one in Belgium and another in Austin - which ended in "Faustian deals” and forced Pierre to give up the breweries he built. The beer world mourned Pierre's passing in 2011. He is credited with reviving witbier, which had all but died in the 1950s. Celis Brewery “2.0”, essentially the third iteration of the brewery, is by Christine Celis, Pierre’s daughter. With help from outside investors, the brewery and taproom opened in 2017. Using her father’s original recipes, Christine recreated the beers that were her father’s legacy. She also introduced new ones that promise to continue the family name’s legendary reputation. Daytona Camps, Christine's daughter, joins her mother at the brewery. Like her mother, she is also a brewer having perfected her brewing skills around the U.S. and in Europe. Austin Beerworks beers are only sold within about 50 miles of Austin, but the brewery is gaining national recognition. They recently made Forbes 11 Best Beers list in 2018. The brand started with their first release in April 2011. Initially raising the eyebrows of craft beer fans by having them distributed in bold, attractive cans, it went from a startup to “growing by over 180% each year”. Today, they have “core four” beers - Peacemaker, Pearl-Snap, Flavor Country, and Fire Eagle. In addition, they have a rotating set of seasonal beers, and the Heavy Machinery seasonal IPA series. They also lay claim to a world's first - the 99-pack - a marketing gimmick to promote their Peacemaker "Anytime Ale". In 2016, Austin Chronicle dubbed them “the new official beer of Austin”. In 2017, they expanded to a 15,000+ square foot warehouse next door to the brewery. Austin Beerworks has been included in our list of 10 Must-Try Craft Breweries in Austin (2020). Draught House Pub and Brewery

Craft Brewery in Austin - 22.59 mi

The Draught House Pub and Brewery has had a long history. Celebrating its 50th year in 2019, the first owners were Wayne and Gay Overton in 1969. They ran the pub for 25 years until Wayne passed on. The building and the pub changed hands a couple of times until current owner Josh Wilson took over in 1999. In the intervening years, with a brewery system installed in 1995, the pub started brewing its own beers, and the number of taps increased to 74. It’s included in "America's Best Beer Bars" by Playboy Magazine, maybe back when Playboy was still a purveyor of good taste. This is just, however, among many other accolades from different publications. With “thousands of scrawled messages carved into the wooden tables”, meanwhile, it has seen some of its patrons grow up. If the newer reviews on review sites are any indication, however, it’s going to be around for 50 years more.

Barrow Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Salado - 22.99 mi

The Barrow Brewing Company owners Graydon and KD Hill hold fast to three principles in running their brewery. These are quality, sustainability, and community. The brewery’s popularity is a testament to the quality of their beers. To underscore their sustainability practices, the couple reused discarded knotty pine planks to decorate the brewery's walls. Before the building was converted into a brewery, the planks were used to store tons of grain at the granary. Salado is a small town of about 2,000 people. It has a “rich, diverse community of veterans, hippies, golfers, artists, saints, and free spirits". The Hills realized, however, that the town couldn't have its own craft brewery because of existing laws. With the community's support, they petitioned to have local laws changed. In honor of the people who supported them, the brewery created the 784 Belgian Style White Ale, representing the number of people who voted in their favor.

Frontyard Brewing

Craft Brewery in Austin - 23.11 mi

Frontyard Brewing doesn’t just brew beer. Instead, the brewery aims to build a friendly and family-oriented community, and the “beer is just the invitation”. The brewery currently has a lineup of five beers. These consist of the Belgian Blond Ale, Rye IPA, Coffee Milk Stout, Oatmeal Stout, and Belgian Golden Ale. Instead of putting up their own taproom, a “hallmark” of any brewery, the brewery upon launch upended the traditional brewery business plan by selling their beers first around Austin. As of October 2019, the brewery is busy with the construction of their “front yard”. When finished, it will house the brewery’s expanded facilities, and features the company’s very own taproom. Expected to open by spring 2020, owners and founders Kevin Jones and Chad Worner are hoping to see their fans in their “porch” and sipping on a pint. Meanwhile, Frontyard invites its fans to use the brewery's website to learn where their beers are available.

Batch – Craft Beer & Kolaches

Craft Brewery in Austin - 23.96 mi

Batch Craft Beer & Kolaches started in 2017 as a family-owned and operated kolache bakery, taproom, and retail craft beer shop. Founders and brothers Noah and Josh Lit introduced Austinites to their preference of downing their kolaches with their favorite beers. Batch's beer selection came from local craft breweries and European breweries. In addition, they also had cans and bottles from many breweries, and coffee for non-beer drinkers. After a couple of years just serving other breweries’ beers with their kolaches, the brothers collaborated with John Snyder and Heath Shuford. Together, they launched a 2019 Kickstarter campaign to start their own brewery. Batch has since released their first batch for their 2nd year anniversary celebration in August 2019 – a “saison aged in Cabernet barrels with pink peppercorns, Texas wildflower honey, and dandelion”. They also sold Batch Bottle Club, Elite Brewery, and Beer for Life memberships, which ended in October 2019.
