Hempstead is a city in and the county seat of Waller County. It is also part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. It is located at the intersection of US 260, SH 6, and SH 159, northwest of downtown Houston. It was first organized in late 1856, when a railroad depot was projected in the area. One of the founders named the townsite after Dr. G. S. B. Hempstead, his brother-in-law from Ohio. Hempstead became a distribution center in 1858, the year when the town was also incorporated. It also served as a Confederate supply and manufacturing center during the Civil War. Cotton production and textile manufacturing were their economic activities until cotton was replaced by produce shipping and truck hauling in the 20th century. That was also the time when the city was nicknamed “Six-Shooter Junction” due to disputes by political and social disagreements. Despite this, the number of residents gradually continued to grow. As of 2010, its population was 5,770.
