Named after a Union Officer, Van Horn began with the discovery of Van Horn Wells which was discovered by Jefferson Van Horne, an Army Major. During the Civil War, the wells were captured by Confederates, led by Lt. James Hudson Van Horn. In 1881 the railway was built which the town grew up on. The first person to die in Van Horn was an infant child of the Beach family but according to local legend, the first to die was a rancher A. S. Goynes. In tribute to Van Horn's climate, Goynes supposedly suggested the motto, "This Town Is So Healthy We Had to Shoot a Man to Start a Cemetery". He was later shot to death.
