Located on the south side of downtown Fort Worth, Rahr and Sons Brewing Company opened its doors in 2004. The Rahr family started making beer in America in 1847 after William and Natalie Rahr immigrated from Rhineland, Germany to Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The steadily increasing population of European settlers created a demand for beer of better quality than “the typical kitchen brew” and William knew he was the person to fill the void. Today, Rahr Malting Co. produces and supplies malt and industry-related brewing supplies to roughly “90% of the breweries in the United States.” Inside Rahr and Sons Brewing, you can expect to line up for a pint of beer. Texas Ale Project

Texas Ale Project has been brewing beers in Dallas since 2014, but there are some unique twists to their story. For one, they recently launched their first hard seltzer beverage, TAP WTR hard seltzers. This line is an “alternative offering for those who are gluten-intolerant” and want a “lower calorie alcoholic beverage”. They’re also the first brewery and taproom “built from the ground up” since the 1800s. The brewery is a veteran-owned family affair. Navy veteran Brent Thompson is Head Brewer, and wife Kat is CEO. Kat’s father, David Stevens, an entrepreneur and also a veteran, heads sales and business development. Kat’s mom Shelley, an interior designer, led the design team for the brewery’s construction. The company’s facilities at the Design District are family and dog friendly. They have free brewery tours every first Saturday of the month at 2pm.

The Manhattan Project Beer Company

The Manhattan Project Beer Company’s name is a nod to the scientific way the brewery’s founders create their beers. Of course, the brewery’s name also makes for cool beer names. Consider Particles Collide (a Hazy IPA), Atomic Alliance (a piña colada IPA), and their infamous Bikini Atoll (a Gose). The most fascinating thing about The Manhattan Project Beer Company besides their delicious beers, however, is how the founders upended everyone’s business plan. The founders essentially proved that one didn’t need a taproom or own a brewery to succeed in the brewery business. Their story started with a brew created for a wedding, which led to a win at a homebrewing competition, and finally culminated in their “renting brewing space like a room on Airbnb”. Since those early days in 2016, founders Misty Sanford, Karl Sanford, and Jeremy Brodt have enjoyed a cult-like following. They’re expecting to open their taproom in late 2019.

Husband and wife Terry and Catherine Gordon are first time commercial brewers who opened Thirsty Bro Brewing in Royse City. Calling their guests “bros and bro-ettes”, they aim to be that neighborhood taproom where everybody can say "cheers!" to one another and not be a stranger. Opened in March 2017, Thirsty Bro Brewing is the city's first brewery. The brewery uses “the finest hops, grains, and other ingredients”. For extra thirsty bros and bro-ettes, there’s a 17oz Tankards Club. Members get access to a wide variety of beers and gluten-reduced selections”. Located at the historic downtown area of the city, the brewery invites guests to order from a local restaurant or go BYOF (bring your own food).

Tupps Brewery

The “Tupps” in TUPPS Brewery is Tupper Patnode, its co-founder, head brewer, and half of a two-man partnership. Its other half is co-founder Keith Lewis, a sales and marketing guy. Together, they blend art and science, and sprinkle in some business savvy to run a successful brewery. They start with great beer, which accounts for the artistic side, and use the senses to create, validate, and refine the beers. The scientific side comes in “to ensure quality and consistency in the brewing process”. A brewery is a business, however, and needs business smarts. For TUPPS, that means using management tools to streamline operations or taking in an excellent distribution partner. It seems Keith and Tupper perfected beer brewing. They opened in 2015, and a year later, production grew by 400 percent in total volume. Visit TUPPS at McKinney’s historic Cotton Mill complex and see for yourself. They have free tours every Saturday at 12:30pm.

Turning Point Beer

The owners of Turning Point Beer had another name in mind for their brewery. Luckily, they settled on “Turning Point”, which appropriately describes the different milestones they accomplished to get where they are. These milestones, among others, include two of its founders working for “two of DFW’s most respected craft beer breweries” prior to putting up their own. They also had to win the support of the Bedford community, some of whom opposed the opening of the brewery. Despite the challenges, they finally opened on March 2018. The owners chose the Mid-Cities location because it “is where a lot of people live”. The brewery specializes in New England-style hazy beers, with one publication saying they put “unique spins on underrepresented beers”. The owners hope “to mark a ‘turning point’ for craft beer” in the neighborhood. By the way, you have six seconds to guess what the name of the brewery could have been.

Union Bear Brewing Co. opened in Plano in early January 2018. It is part of the Frisco-based 33 Restaurant Group, which operates several other concept restaurants. The brewery marks the opening of Plano’s first independent brewery and brewpub. They offer "plenty of beers to choose from and their entrees are a generous size". To complement their craft beers, the restaurant offers an extensive “menu of approachable, chef-driven plates”. They also have a selection of cocktails for guests. Wild Acre Brewing Company

Located in Fort Worth’s historical Hell’s Half Acre, Wild Acre Brewing Company’s brewery and taproom are surrounded on one side by a wooded area. This “surprising bastion of nature” is just a mile or two from bustling downtown Fort Worth. The very large climate-controlled 5,000 sq ft taproom also features a landscaped outdoor beer garden. Opened in 2016 by owner/founder John Pritchett, the brewery has announced ongoing expansion plans for the brewery. Unlike other brewery owners and founders, John’s background is in beer distribution. The brewery expands its footprint and distribution capabilities with the opening of the brewery’s second location at the Ridglea Hills neighborhood. The new 3,000 sq ft second location has its own brewing system and restaurant. Expect to find their lineup of quality craft beer such as their Ranch Style Pils and T-Hawk IPA.

Woodcreek Brewing Company

Woodcreek Brewing Company is Rockwall’s first brewery – and also its oldest brewery to date. Established in 2014 and operated starting May 2015, owners Noah Cutshall and Brad Bramblett were active members of a local homebrewing group. Like most homebrewers, they started in their own garage. They eventually named their brewery in honor of their Woodcreek neighborhood in Fate, Texas. "These folks are awesome! Lots of great beers, and plenty to choose from". Also, "would also highly recommend their IPA, Bock, Vanilla Porter, and Strawberry Rhubarb beer". Finally, Noah and Brad initially applied their licenses for Longhorn Brewing Company. They decided to change the name in remembrance of where they started.
