Cycler’s Brewing

Craft Brewery in Montgomery -

According to Cycler's Brewing brewmaster and founder Clay Wick, “cycling and craft beer are kind joined at the hip”. After all, many look forward to a refreshing drink at the end of a long ride. Clay, who once worked for Coors, got “enthralled” with his first taste of craft beer, and subsequently fell in love with the many varieties available. It was then that he knew that he wanted to be a part of the creation process. Located inside the Sam Houston National Forest, Clay, his wife Tina, and the other owners of Cycler’s named the brewery after the sport popular in the forest. Their beers have cycling themes such as the cleverly named Ryed Hard. There’s also the DeRailleur, referring to the “mechanism that transfers the chain from one set of gears to another”. Together with the seven core beers, they also have a set of limited-release barrel-aged beers.

Devil and the Deep Brewery

Craft Brewery in Galveston -

Opened in February 2018, Devil and the Deep Brewery was the second craft brewery to open in Galveston. The brewery’s opening was the culmination of founder Eric Walker’s efforts and dreams. A native of Tucson, Arizona, Eric first joined the Navy and then the Army. In the course of his military career, he eventually transferred to Fort Hood, and in 2011, moved to Austin. After volunteering in various breweries, he decided to open his own brewery in 2016. Along the way, he almost shuttered his plans because of a foundation problem with the first building he leased. As luck would have it, someone else offered him another lease, and the rest, as they say, is history. With its deep blue sea motif, the brewery specializes in Belgian and rustic ales. There are retro arcade video games lined up on one wall, and the climate controlled spacious taproom has picnic table seating. There’s art on the walls, too!

Eureka Heights Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston -

The six owners of Eureka Heights Brewing Company, three married couples actually, named their brewery after a fault line that runs through The Heights area in Houston. By design, the brewery specializes in “sessionable beers” with low ABVs. Seasonal offerings - some with higher ABVs - complement their core beers. At the spacious 20,000 square feet taproom, a former food distribution warehouse, visitors can see the gleaming stainless steel tanks while enjoying their beers. Open since fall 2016, the brewery is popular for their Wednesday Trivia Nights. The breweries started canning their beers in summer 2018, and these are already available in major stores. The team keeps things around the brewery light and humorous. For example, the owners usually name their beers after inside jokes or references.  Food is available via local food trucks, and the outdoor seating area is pet-friendly.

Fetching Lab Brewery

Craft Brewery in Texas City -

The owners of Fetching Lab Brewery are Brett Bray and Theresa Hutchings, but everyone knows that Bella is both mascot and CEO. Brett was a real-life NASA scientist while Theresa worked as quality assurance lead at one of world’s largest airplane manufacturers. According to Brett and Theresa, we can’t show Bella a ball or she’ll ask you to play “fetch” the whole day long. You see, Bella’s a Yellow Lab, and pretty much runs the whole place. She even gets to choose the pooch that’s featured in Fetching Lab’s lineup of delicious beers. Fetching Lab first started creating their beers in Alvin, Texas and sold their first kegs in 2015. In late December 2018, however, they expanded operations and have their own taproom in Texas City. They currently create five year-round “full production brews” that are available in other taprooms and four seasonal offerings. These are available only at their taproom or in limited quantities.

Fire Ant Brewing

Craft Brewery in Tomball -

It took quite a while for the owners of Fire Ant Brewing to have their dream brewery – almost eight years, they say. After getting approval from the city, they still had to wait some more for construction and a few setbacks. Everyone seems to agree, however, that the wait was worth it. A true brewpub, Fire Ant Brewing also features a restaurant and a bar patio that’s been voted #1 in Tomball. The brewpub serves the town known for its strong German heritage, and also the surrounding areas of Woodlands, Spring, Magnolia and the Cypress. With this in mind, the brewpub made sure to have a few German-inspired food and beers on the menu. Fire Ant is great for families and dog-friendly. Watch their social media pages for announcements on their happy hours and other events.

Fortress Beer Works

Craft Brewery in Spring -

The brewery’s opening makes it Spring’s first and the 53rd for the Greater Houston area. The secluded but inviting taproom and brewery has over 6,600 square feet of space for guests. The indoor and outdoor seating areas easily accommodate over 100 people. There’s a fenced in playground for kids with plans to add more kid-friendly stuff. Open 7 days a week, Fulbrook’s taproom is great for guests with kids and pets. It currently features a lineup of six beers, and owing to Ivey’s background, all have military-themed names. The brewery and taproom accepts reservations for events as well.

Galveston Bay Beer Company

Craft Brewery in Dickinson -

Established in 2014, the Galveston Bay Beer Company is Galveston County’s largest brewery. At the time, it was also one of the first in the area. The interesting thing about the brewery besides its beers is its commitment to preserving Galveston County’s rich beer brewing history, which dates back to 1895. The company has artifacts related to the craft of beer brewing from the past 120 years. Their air-conditioned taproom at Dickinson is open daily. With at least 12 beers to choose from, some are exclusive to the taproom only. Opened in 2016, they “specialize in lighter style beers but dark beer fans can enjoy the Bull Shark, their Scottish ale". A blogger advises readers to ask their bartenders about “High Grade” and the beer's interesting backstory during the prohibition era.

Galveston Island Brewing

Craft Brewery in Galveston -

Galveston Island Brewing’s Mark Dell’Osso established the brewery in June 2014. Mark is a former home brewer and tugboat captain who’s had stints with various breweries. Co-workers used to enjoy his homemade beers at after-work parties. A version of that popular home brew, Blue Bridge Hoppy Amber, won bronze at the 2017 Great American Beer Festival. His Tiki Wheat, the brewery’s bestselling flagship beer, and four other year-round staples, sustain the Galveston brewery’s “island vibes”. Besides brewing beer, Mark is also into boating, sailing, and surfing, which may explain his team’s pride in pacing their growth. He calls it “island time”, and prevents them from growing too fast. This explains why they’re more concerned with getting things right in Galveston and the surrounding areas rather than expanding to Houston.

Craft Brewery in Alvin -

Great Heights Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston -

Sean Bednarz and Patrick Christian of Great Heights Brewing Company have been friends since fifth grade. During a camping in the summer of 2015, they stopped by at various breweries in Colorado, and started discussing the possibilities of opening one. In 2017, a few days before Harvey struck, they opened their doors to their new taproom. Prior to opening the brewery, both Sean and Christian held desk jobs with long hours. They say that putting up the company is “living the dream”. What makes their brewery extra special is that they chose to establish it in their old neighborhood of Garden Oaks/ Oak Forest. Today, Sean handles the brewing part while Patrick takes care of the sales side. Tips: The brewery is open daily but hours vary (check their website). The patio is pet-friendly, and there’s soda and popcorn for kids. There are food trucks from Wednesdays to Saturdays, but they don’t mind if you bring food from outside.

They have created over 100 brewing recipes since they started, and you’re bound to find something new with each visit. Huff Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Bellville -

Huff Brewing Company is located in the small town of Bellville. Opened in 2012, husband and wife Ryan and Christine Huff own and operate the small brewery with a commitment to creating excellent beers. It is located about four miles from downtown Bellville. The brewery is a first for the town since Prohibition shutdown a brewery in 1918. Among its lineup of beers are the Huffmeister and Huff’s Original Amber. Both Ryan and Christine maintain their full-time jobs and share bar tending duties. This is why the taproom is only open on Fridays. The couple didn’t initially set out to establish a taproom. Instead, the plan was to offer their creations in Houston and supply bars and restaurants in the region. Tip: Occasionally, and sometimes by appointment, they might be open on a Saturday. They don’t serve food but check their Facebook page if a food truck is scheduled.

Ingenious Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Humble -

Ingenious Brewing Company is by Mike Broderick, its head brewer, and Justin Gyorfi, urologist by profession. The brewery specializes in “small batch beers” that “diverge from traditional norms”. Less than a year from their first anniversary, the brewery is barely able to keep up with the demand and is eyeing to open a second location. The brewery specializes in “tart fruited sours, pastry stouts, hop-loaded IPAs, and milkshake IPAs”. Enjoy them at the 2,000 square meter air-conditioned taproom, possibly including the “colorful” Smarty Stone beers. This line of beers took inspiration from the colors of Marvel’s Infinity Stones. You’ll have to come often, though, since they rotate beers often. You might even see a favorite making a comeback.
