The town’s namesake is Kentuckian Chas. B. Combes who relocated here in the early 1900s and formed the Combe’s Ranch. Combe is located in the northwestern Cameron County. The town developed after 1904 when the railway was built. A post office was opened in 1911 and by 1915 there were 100 residents. The community was incorporated during the 1950s, and in 1956 it consisted of a central community surrounded by numerous scattered dwellings. The community experienced its greatest growth in the 1980s, going over 2,000 for the 1990 census and over 2,500 for the 2000 census.
