Dryden is an unincorporated community in Terrel County. It was founded in 1882, when a railway built tracks through the county. Hence, the town was named after Eugene Dryden, the railway’s chief engineer. A couple of years later, the community became the headquarters of the Pecos Land and Cattle Company, in which, together with several other ranches, shipped cattle from its station in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1888, a post office was established and by 1908, the community had the Dryden Hotel, along with a community center, a church, and a schoolhouse. From the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, Dryden had two or three businesses, which served 50 residents that includes tourists and fishermen.
