Hartley is a census-designated place in Hartley County. It is located at the intersection of US 87 and US 385, fourteen miles southeast of Dalhart. It was organized in 1891 and it was named after the Harltey brothers, early lawyers in the area. Hartley had once become the county seat; however, the community was defeated by Channing. Despite the residents’ menaces, armed deputies and XIT Ranch cowboys were able to transfer Harley’s courthouse to Channing. But still, Harley continued its growth through its advertisements. The town became a shipping center for grain and cattle. By 1990, Harley had 370 residents; it was increased to 441 by the year 2000. And as of 2010, its population was 540.
