Leggett is an unincorporated community located in Polk County in Texas. As of 2000, the town’s population was just around 500 residents. The community is located at the intersection of FM 942, and U.S Highway 59. The community is distributed by its own Independent School District. James R. Freeman was one of the first settlers of the town, he moved to the area in 1873. The town used to be called Red Horse by the residents because of Freeman’s use of the red horse sign on his property. In 1882. When the community gained its post office, it was renamed to Leggett, after an early settler Ralph Leggett.
