One of the more famous cattle barons named Christopher C. Slaughter died in 1919 and just two years later his successors disbanded his cattle company. Minnie Slaughter Veal, who was Christopher’s eldest daughter hired an agent to sell the part of her property, and the agent that went by the name Morton Smith founded the town in 1923 and named it after himself, Morton. The city of Morton became the county seat over a town named Ligon in 1924. In 1933, the city of Morton was incorporated. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 2,006 residents. The town has a total area of 1.5 square miles as stated by the U.S Bureau.
