Amherst City is located in Lamb County in the US state of Texas. According to the 2010 census, the city had a population of 721. The city was founded in 1913 as a railway station for ranch. In 1923, Amherst College was established in the city. The first post office in the area was opened in 1924. By 1930, Amherst had become a trade center with 964 people and 35 businesses. It also had amenities such as the Amherst Argus and a newspaper. Amherst Hotel was the first permanent building in the town. The hotel became a popular stop for shopping for many years.
