Petersburg was named for Zack Peters and his wife, Margaret, who was the city's first postmistress when it was founded in 1891 originally as a post office in southwestern Floyd County. The post office was moved 5 miles (8 km) southwest into Hale County when Ed M. White established a store at the site of the present community, in southeastern Hale County, in 1902. Also, Petersburg is located on the high plains of the Llano Estacado in southeastern Hale County. It is 27 miles (43 km) south of Plainview, the county seat, and 31 miles (50 km) northeast of Lubbock. Petersburg was platted in 1909 and the Fort Worth and Denver Railway was built through the town in 1928. Wheat and milo were the primary crops until cotton was first planted in 1905. It was incorporated in 1927. With a total area of 0.81 square miles, they reached a population of 1,137 in 2017. Also, the city is served by the Petersburg Independent School District and is home to the Petersburg High School Buffaloes.
