Whole Food Market Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 5.62 mi

Whole Foods Market Brewing is one of two Whole Foods U.S. locations with a brewery inside the store. Its current brewer, James Carlyle, took over after his mentor Dave Ohmer left. According to James, the brewery is “an off the wall concept of grocery store and brewery in one”. This Houston location on 1700 Post Oak Blvd also distributes to a few bars including The Flying Saucer and Craft Beer Cellar. The other location in San Jose also has a brewery but does not serve other accounts. According to an online interview with James, the team uses a 5BBL system for now but hopes to expand soon, including canning their own brews.

Baileson Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 5.67 mi

Established by husband Adam Cryer and his wife, Sarah Pope, the Baileson Brewing Company features two of man’s best friends – beers and pooches. The “pooches” part come from the company’s name – a combination of the couple’s two dogs Bailey and Jameson. (They have a third fur baby called Beau, who came later.) The brewery, of course, supplies the handcrafted beers, especially ales. Located in the outskirts of the Rice Village area in Houston, the brewery was an old gas station built in 1950 until the building became an auto-service station in the mid-1970s. The couple retained the exterior canopy, which serves as the brewpub’s patio, and fitted it with picnic tables. They allow non-beer fans to bring wine from their neighbor next door, and allow outside food. The place, of course, is “dog-friendliest”, with the couple claiming that their pooches “have better social lives” than their humans.

The Phoenix On Westheimer

Craft Brewery in Houston - 6.75 mi

Established in December 2006, Phoenix On Westheimer is a Houston neighborhood brewpub. This “home-away-from-home” invites guests to “a welcoming place” and features an extensive selection of house brews and craft beers from other popular Texas breweries. They also carry craft beers from other states, several national brands, and even European imports. There is wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages, of course, and the food menu is just as extensive. Because it’s a sports bar, after all, there are 5 large projection screens and 24 LED TVs. They even say that if a game is “televised or legally streamed”, they should have access to it. Not interested in the game? There are other ways to unwind, including billiards. Still not convinced? They have daily deals that might just make you drop by for a visit.

Under The Radar Brewery

Craft Brewery in Houston - 7.80 mi

As with other craft breweries, Under The Radar Brewery got its start in homebrewing. Its three founders brewed in their garage until they realized they could bring their hobby to the next level. Starting out small and opening without so much as a sign, the brewery’s name suggests how things were initially done at the brewery. It also found a perfect spot among condos and townhomes, and further bolsters the under-the-radar nature of the brewery. Their taproom, though small, has an outdoor area, and serves five “usuals” (their core beers) and a couple of seasonal/ special beers. It’s also kid- and dog-friendly, much like a backyard in one’s neighborhood. They’re not canning their brews yet, but do check their website for updates on where their beers are available.

Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 8.36 mi

The Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company thrives on creativity and imagination. It has a simple mission: (1) “create great craft beer that is unapologetically Houston,” and (2) “bring people around great beer.” Their slogan reflects it – “Houston’s most creative brewery”. Founded by two friends Ras Zarinfar and Ryan Robertson in March 2011, many things have happened since they started at their original location on Nolda Street. Once a boat storage warehouse, they imagined, and created, a successful brewery and taproom business. About 70 craft beers later, they imagined bigger things for their Houston community. Within six weeks, the company raised $1M in funding from 583 individuals to build a 28,000 sq. ft. brewery and taproom. The new location opens in Fall 2019, with three floors of beer goodness. It’s much like, as the owners would like to say, Willy Wonka’s beer factory, but run by a Belgian monk in Texas cowboy boots! The deck offers spectacular views of the Houston skyline! Imagine that…

4J Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 8.96 mi

4J Brewing Company is a family-owned craft nano-brewery owned and operated by four siblings. The “J” refers to their names – Jessica, Jackie, Joana, and Jennifer. This 100% female-owned and female-brewed operation is based in the Houston/Spring Branch area and serves Amber Ale, Blonde Ale, India Pale Ale, Pale Ale, and American Stout at their taproom. The 4J’s beers are only available at their taproom. The siblings have decorated the place with many repurposed items from the 4J Ranch. (Mom and Dad also own 4J Ranch in Blue, Texas.) They also accept special private events at the taproom and offer memberships into the 4J Ladies. The 4J Ladies hold monthly events on the last Thursday of each month, and usually invite female business owners to talk about their expertise.

Holler Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 9.29 mi

After a long circuitous life journey, husband and wife John and Kathryn found their true calling by establishing Holler Brewing Company. Thank the beer gods that the Hollers decided to move to Houston in 2009. To prepare, both ditched their unrelated old jobs, and separately undertook a different route towards the brewery business. John earned his diploma from Siebel Institute of Chicago. Kathryn, meanwhile, racked up hands-on experience at a brewery in Florida. In November 2016, they finally opened the brewery and haven’t looked back since. At the taproom, find a rotating list of about 6-8 beers. Stop by often. They have created over 100 brewing recipes since they started, and you’re bound to find something new with each visit. As if the beers aren’t enough, every Wednesday is Steak Night with their partner, Snow Topi.

True Anomaly Brewing Company

Craft Brewery in Houston - 9.35 mi

True Anomaly Brewing specializes in “hop-forward ales, Belgian-style ales, and wild/sour fermented ‘explorations’”. With this kind of lineup of craft beers, the anomaly would be the right word. And, 10 years after and countless beer batches brewed, they finally decided to start a brewery. True Anomaly is also space-themed. This includes the building's exteriors. And also, the “contemporary-industrial interiors”. Plus, the NASA posters hanging from the walls and the names of its beers. All of which are related to the founders’ backgrounds.

By design, the brewery specializes in “sessionable beers” with low ABVs. Seasonal offerings - some with higher ABVs - complement their core beers. At the spacious 20,000 square feet taproom, a former food distribution warehouse, visitors can see the gleaming stainless steel tanks while enjoying their beers. Open since fall 2016, the brewery is popular for their Wednesday Trivia Nights. The breweries started canning their beers in summer 2018, and these are already available in major stores. In 2017, a few days before Harvey struck, they opened their doors to their new taproom. Prior to opening the brewery, both Sean and Christian held desk jobs with long hours. They say that putting up the company is “living the dream”. What makes their brewery extra special is that they chose to establish it in their old neighborhood of Garden Oaks/ Oak Forest.
