The US city of Ackerly is located in two counties — Martin and Dawson. According the 2010 census, the city had a population of 220. Ackerly was founded in1923 and named after its founder Paul Ackerly, a native of Georgia. The establishment of the city was as a result of breaking up of the then Slaughter Ranch into farming tracts. The city hit global headlines when a local claimed to have discovered a meteorite while he tended to his cotton field. A post office was opened in the town in 1924 with W. A. Wilson as its first postmaster. The following year, Ackerly got its first school.
