Forsan, Texas is located in the extreme southern part of Howard County. The community was named for the four oil sands believed to be located nearby but driller later discovered it was actually five oil sands. Forsan experienced boomtown growth by 1931. Cock fighting was an entertainment that was popular there. On March 25, 1961, Forsan elected the first mayor and city council in the history of the town. Even before Forsan became a town, ranching was very important in the area. After the World War II, sheep ranching became the primary concern because the terrain is rocky and buffalo grass grows well in the area.
