Unlike its name, the city is one of the smallest and is found in Dimmit County with 697 residents as per the 2010 census. By the end of 2018, Big Wells had an estimated population of 712 people. Its name was derived from the artesian wells that were alleged to jet water 30 feet into the air. At its inception, it was a prime area for many developers as evidenced by the many projects in the area between 1909 and 1917. By 1910, Big Wells had attracted several settlers. The first school started in 1911, and by 1915, it had a population of 800.
