Cotulla is a city and the administrative center of La Salle County. It was named after Joseph Cotulla, a Polish immigrant who gave land to a railroad in order to persuade them to build into the county. In 1882, a railroad depot was built and lots in the new town started to sold out. A year after, Cotulla was granted a post office, and several new buildings were constructed, including a general store, a hotel, and a jail. It was the same year that Cotulla had been assigned as the county seat of La Salle County. Consequently, the town began to grow. In 1890, there were three general stores, two weekly newspapers, two churches, one saloon, one bank, one corn mill, and one cotton gin. Three years after, it was said that three sheriffs and nineteen residents have been killed in gunfights, although one of them sheriffs may have been a suicide case. The city’s economy has been primarily based on ranching sheep and cattle. The town built its first airport in 1949 and a year after, the discovery of oil in the area has helped in bolstering the economy of Cotulla.
