Covington is a city in Hill County. It was founded in 1852 by Colonel James Jackson Gathings, a Mississippian who came to Texas and bought 10,000 acres of land in what is now known as Hill County. As he established a large and successful farming and ranching operations based on slave labor, Gathings set aside 100 acres for his wife’s family, thus naming it after his wife’s maiden name, Covington. In 1885, Gathings became the postmaster of Covington and together with his brother, they founded Gathings College in the early 1860s. The school operated for 25 years. Although the town experienced its first setback when it was bypassed by the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas Railroad, the tracks of the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway reached and saved the community in 1904. During the next three decades, the town has become a shipping and retail center that served its farmers and ranchers, until the Great Depression hit the town and the Trinity and Brazos Valley discontinued the stop at Covington.
