Dougherty is an unincorporated community in Floyd County. It was established in 1928 and was named after Francis M. Dougherty, a merchant, and a Texas legislator. A year later, the town established its post office and school. Dougherty soon prospers, but it was crushed when the construction of Highway 62/70 bypassed the town. Then, the Dougherty Independent School District was consolidated to Floydada Independent School District in 1987. To date, Dougherty still has its post office and it still appears on the official state map. The town maintained a population of around 100 from the late 1940s to the year 2000.
