Myra is located in western Cooke County. Founded in 1887, the town was named after the daughter of the railroad superintendent of the construction. In 1898 one of the first oil wells in Cooke County was drilled at the townsite. This brought many people to the townsite. The well was abandoned in 1901, however, when oil and gas production proved unprofitable. Water infrastructure and telephone service began in 1902. IN the 1930s, businesses started moving to the county seat when the highway bypassed the town. Myra is home to an annual spring barbecue dinner for the public as a fund-raiser to benefit the Myra Volunteer Fire Department.
