Named by Catholic priest Joseph Reisdorff, Nazareth is in east-central Castro County. The town has always been primarily a Catholic community. The first settlers arrived in September 1902. The town was platted in 1904. The community’s cemetery was consecrated in 1906, making it the only Catholic cemetery in that area. In the 1930s dust storms hit the area which caused a decline in population because farming became unprofitable. Agriculture revived again during the 1940s. The Nazareth Swiftettes basketball team from the Nazareth Independent School District won 24 state championships from 1977 to 2000. A 2007 article on ESPN.com documented the town and the women's basketball team.
