Elected as the county seat of Swisher County, Tulia is located in the central part of the county. The site was originally on the acreage of the Tule Ranch division of the JA Ranch. The main economic activities are farming and agriculture. Tulia has always been a center for farming and agribusiness activities. In 1900 Tulia became an important stop for wagons going to the railroads in Amarillo and Colorado City. When the railroad came six years after, the town began to boom. Tulia gained notoriety following a drug sting in July 1999. Rattlesnake is a 2019 crime drama mystery film set in Tulia.
